Death Reporting Requirements and Benefits

Reporting a Veteran’s Death and Applying for Survivor’s Benefits
#

Losing a loved one is a challenging time — we are here to help. As the survivor of a military veteran or a servicemember, you need to check to see if you qualify for survivor benefits, including help with burial costs.

If your loved one was receiving VA compensation or pension benefits, you also need please contact the VA to report the Veteran’s death and avoid an overpayment of the Veteran’s benefits.  Use this link to get the instructions on how to do that.  It tells you how to report a death by internet, mail or phone.  When you do this, VA will stop any benefit payments the Veteran received as required by law.  Timely reporting of the death timely will help  ensure survivors or executors of the veteran’s estate do not experience additional financial stress.

For information on other VA benefits in addition to those above and often not thought about, click here for a listing.

Or simply call your County Director of Veterans Affairs for assistance in starting the process.  After all, there are county burial benefits involved, although Funeral Directors are meant to help you on this matter.

For more information on burial benefits, try LVMAC’s Answers Desk link on the subject.
