In this blog site, we often write of entitlements and benefits veterans can receive. However, as a population category, veterans contribute far more through their labors than they take from their communities. Indeed, many veterans have the wisdom to understand the benefits of giving of themselves to improve their communities and those of others.
Below is one fine example of local, Lehigh Valley veterans trying to do far-reaching good — in this case, for the poor — while attending to the spiritual/psychic well-being of fellow veterans. As it happens, an effort such as this also shows the world the better side of the American people and our way of life. Therefore, they gain for us in another way. About September 2014, the Allentown Outpatient Clinic began offering Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) according to Dr. Adelman, the new Director of the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center. He announced it during an 18 December meeting of the Veterans Advisory Group at the clinic.
The mission of HBPC is to provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary primary care in the homes of veterans with complex medical conditions when routine, clinic-based care would not be effective or practicable. Consequently, the program focuses on the frail and chronically ill who require interdisciplinary care and ensures the necessary continuity and coordination of the care occurs at home as much as possible. You may qualify for the Civilian Health and Medical Program of VA (CHAMPVA), which can reimburse you for doctor’s visits, mental health care, prescriptions, and many other services. Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center would like you to know that on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, from 7–8 p.m. Eastern, VA and Blue Star Families (a nonprofit organization not related to Blue Star Mothers) will host a Facebook chat about VA benefits for Veterans’ spouses, dependents, and survivors. Operation Homefront through its Homes on the Homefront program wants to help military veterans and their families realize their own American dreams. It continues to receive donated homes to award to deserving military families around the country through partners like Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Meritage Homes. The homes are renovated to “move in ready” standards and ultimately deeded over subject to certain conditions being met.
A home in Easton has just become available for a deserving and eligible military veteran family. Those interested must apply by 8 November, currently. (more…)
