LVMAC News — Local War Veteran’s Family Receive Specially Equipped Van
Result of Joint Lehigh Valley Effort with Recycled Rides Program
In a joint effort between the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council (LVMAC), Reliable Auto Body and the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides Program™, the keys to a newly refurbished 2010 BraunAbility EntryVan (wheelchair adapted) were presented to the Mescavage family at an 11 a.m. on 23 May at Reliable Auto Body, located at 967 Sumner Ave., Whitehall, PA.
Michael Mescavage and his wife Annie have lived their lives in service to others, and have dealt with physical challenges themselves for many years. He is a Purple Heart recipient of the Vietnam War and a 100% disabled veteran. His wounds did not slow him down, and he subsequently served as a State Policeman until his retirement in 1992. Mike remains active in The Military Order of the Purple Heart and many other veterans service organizations. His wife, Annie, has likewise overcome. She was stricken with polio at two years of age, but managed to both raise a family and become a nurse – caring for other polio patients. They have beaten the odds and given selflessly to the community.
Some years ago, Mike had to obtain a wheelchair compatible van for his wife as her condition worsened. Recently, the van had to be junked because it was no longer serviceable. It left Annie without the transportation and needed independence she needs to continue to serve others. Since such adapted vehicles are costly, the Recycled Rides Program became a godsend.
This godsend resulted through the combined, charitable efforts of local people and organizations with a heart for veterans and their families: State Farm Insurance donated the vehicle, Deerfoot Auto Parts and Lehigh Valley Bumpers (LVB) donated the parts, Reliable Auto Body of Whitehall refurbished it, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart’s Pennsylvania Chapter 190, a member organization, found the candidate and submitted the application. Mr. Lou Ortelli, Reliable’s owner, originated the idea, in addition to donating Reliable’s services and special assistance.
The Lehigh Valley remembers its veterans and their families; and looks out for its own.
